Your first task
is to create a blog. Use Weebly, or Blogspot, or Wordpress, or…whatever. Create a blog, and be prepared to include at least 5 tabs. One for each assignment.
Remember, you are being asked to become an expert on this book, and the issue(s) in this book. This novel study will give you the opportunity to:
access your empathy in getting to know the characters/people in the story through their struggles and triumphs
develop your understanding of the world through the lens of a certain issue (or issues)
share this understanding, and your inquiry, through a variety of methods and with a variety of audiences
research beyond the novel to expand on your understanding
work collaboratively to educate your colleagues about your novel and issue, and conversely learn about theirs
read carefully and dig deeply into the novel, exercising your close reading skills, Talking to the Text reading strategies, therefore addressing many ELA 9 outcomes
make connections to Social Studies 9 curricular outcomes
Your first assignment
is to compose (writing process required!) and publish a post (likely on the front page of your blog) that includes the following information:
name of your novel
picture of the cover
well-developed explanation as to why you chose the novel; consider exploring the following
if you had heard of the novel before (recommendation?)
if the cover/blurb had any effect on your choice
what you are expecting from the novel
This first assignment should include the designing/aesthetics of your blog.
Assignment Number Two:
Screenshot/create-in-blog your personalized project schedule up to February 28, 2018; keep in mind the following:
you must be completely finished reading your novel by February 28, 2018; you will be the expert on this novel by then!
you must take careful and thoughtful TttT (Talking to the Text) notes in your novel using sticky notes
every 20% of your novel, you must complete a post from the list of posts (for a total of 5)
all 5 posts must be completed by February 28, 2018
you will have time in class to read or work on your posts...whichever you choose to do. Expect that this time will be no more than 40min a day.
